I've been in Minden, LA (my hometown) for two days now. I thought the first week in America was a big culture shock for me; but compare Amsterdam to Minden. Um wow!
I did "watch" the Super Bowl yesterday. Now I'm not a fan of American football (this is putting it lightly - I always thought they wore helmets so they wouldn't hurt themselves when falling off their horses) but I do enjoy hanging out with friends and meeting new people at parties or gatherings.
My sister invited me over to her house to watch the game. Bless her heart... The gathering was kinda of postponed due to the fact that she and one of her friends got their ATVs stuck in mud and then got some trucks stuck trying to help them out. Yes my sister and I are opposites but I love her to death. We've always had this understanding that we are like night and day but will do anything for the other person.
So I decided to go see my grandmother (who also had the game on) until my sis could get back to her house and get the party started. I finally got to her house during the third quarter. [Now this was the first time that I was seeing my sis since May of last year] She introduced me to all her friends who were all very nice. They were not my usual type of people but I did enjoy hanging out with them. On one of my sister's smoke brakes during the night, she made a comment about how she had turned into a big redneck. I told her that it was cool because I had turned into Eurotrash. To each, his own.
Let me set the scene for the evening: I was one of the few people that didn't bring along a handgun. While I was introduced to everyone by their first name, they would mainly refer to each other by last name (and sometimes first names). But half the night, I wasn't sure of anyone's first/last name combination. The two that had nicknames were a mother and her 11-year-old daughter. Now I'm not positive but I am pretty sure that the daughter had finished off 2 Smirnoff Ices by the end of the game. Now this didn't bother me since I've been desensitized by living in Amsterdam. But I found this ironic since 4 or 5 of the people last night were military police. Man I miss the South. People make me happy.
A quick comment on the Super Bowl... after the Colts had won (and yes I was rooting for the horsies to win), someone made a statement regarding the Colts as being worldwide champions (or something like that). Um... how about nationwide. I guess they got kind of caught up in the moment which is understandable.
After the game, we watched Covenent which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was similar to The Craft but with really hot guys in their mid-20s playing high school students. It wasn't a great movie... or even a good movie... but it was definitely my type of movie. Though there were several plot holes and things that weren't explained, there were several scenes that made me willing to forget about the extremely predictable plot and mediocre acting. For example: the swimming scenes, the really hot locker room/shower scene and the car "wrecking" into a log truck scene.
After the movie, I had a date with *B... details on that later on. But to let you know, I'm extremely happy today.
